The Pump Room (attached to the Baths). Ths is where (in Jane Austen's time and in Persuasion and Northanger Abbey) they would go to "drink the waters" and assemble.

The interior of the Pump Room, now a restaurant and tea room. We were standing near the "waters", which we did sample. We tried to get tea there but they didn't take reservations on Sunday. We ended up having "Tea with Mr. Darcy" at the Jane Austen Centre instead.

The "waters" flowing up from a hot mineral spring underground. I think we paid 50 pence to sample it - it was absolutely disgusting!! Tasted like iron and dirt.

A (free) public view of one of the main Roman Baths. We had seen the ones in Rome in '98 so we opted to spend our time elsewhere. Notice the decorated pig - they had a pig theme all throughout Bath while we were there. It was a contest where they were decorated by various shops and organizations. Some of them were absolutely beautiful!

There were many different baths in Bath - opened at various times. This is the Kings and Queens baths. Bath became a spa and health resort for people to come and "take the waters" for any infirmity.

I love this shot. That is Pulteney Bridge (which you'll find in JA's writings). It is the main bridge in town. Our hotel was over it just a little ways.

This gives you a better feel for how the town looked. You had to walk up the hill. Anne Elliot lived up the hill away from the Pump Room so it would have been quite a hike.

Chawton Cottage, Hampshire, England - where Jane lived with her mother, sister Cassandra and their friend, Marth Lloyd (after her mother died.) This is where Jane revised and wrote many of her manuscripts. It is now a museum of her life.
